Long Distance Relationships

A friend of mine recently become involved in a long distance relationship (LDR) and asked me for some advice on how to make it work.  I sort of giggled because the only LDR I have ever had failed horribly!  Then got to thinking, well how could it have worked?  What could I have, or he have done differently?

I believe you have to have something to look forward to!  When will you see each other again!  If possible, alternate trips so that neither person feels that they are putting in more than the other.  The perfect case scenario would be that she flies up to see him for a long weekend and while she is there he books his flight for the following month to go see her and so on…WE ALL NEED SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO!

TEXT, TEXT and TEXT!  Just a thought here and there through out the day to show the other person you are thinking of them.  It could be sweet or sexy, either way it brings a smile to the other persons face!

WEBCAM!  Yes I know it’s not the real thing but it’s something!  You can actually see and talk to each other…I’ll just leave it at that!

SAY GOODNIGHT!  We are all busy during the day and to crawl in bed alone every night is difficult especially when you are in love!  Take the time each night to call and catch up, or at least just to say goodnight!  If you are the last person they talk to before they go to sleep you should be the first person they think of when they wake up!

I think the biggest thing here is TRUST!  You have to be secure enough in your relationship.  What I mean by this is you have to believe in your heart and soul that your love is stronger than anything else!  Had things worked out differently and he and I followed this advice well, maybe, just maybe…

Good luck girlfriend!

LDR is so difficult and you are so positive about the possibility that it can work! I have never seen one work out until recently. A good friend of mine met a woman online. He lived in LA and she lived in LV. They visited a lot and then moved to a whole other state to be together there. She is 8 months pregnant now! How great is that!? They were all about each other and did all the things that you suggest here. And they didn’t even see your article!

You give amazing suggestions to make LDRs work…and since they did all the things you wrote about here…they just gave us the proof! :)

I am glad to hear about such a happy ending Doc! It’s easy to give others advice but when it comes down to our own life…well, I’m sure you get it LOL

    Thanks!

I think it’s important for couples to find things they can do together from a distance. It will help prevent boredom, which is definitely not good for any relationship, but especially LDRs. Here’s a list of 64 activities and ideas long distance couples can do from a distance: http://www.lovingfromadistance.com/thingsforldrcouplestodo.htm
